It made me think about my walk with God. There are times when we have issues that need addressed, and often the diagnosis can seem a little like my visit to the doctor. When God addresses an issue in our lives it can cause pain. We can sometimes even literally 'Jump from our seats!'
One narrative from the Old Testament (2 Kings 5:1-14) is when Naaman is healed of leprosy. You can read the account here. The part I want to look at is Naaman's response to Elsiha's message. Through Elsiha, God has told Namaan how to be healed and his response is to be angry. Now, Namaan seems to be in a rage because he expected something different from the prophet.
10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean.” 11 But Naaman was angry and went away, saying, “Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call upon the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage.In my experience there have been times when God hasn't done what I wanted, or felt I needed. At these times my response has been a little like Namaan. And yet, I have to be honest and admit that there are also moments when later reflection has shown me that my idea of what the solution should have been would not have delivered!
I hope that I am able to pray with the writer of Psalm 139
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!Namaan had servants who were courageous enough to encourage him to do the right thing, obey God, and find healing. I believe that is how to define the Church when we are being who God has called us to be. To find healing and wholeness we sometimes have first to experience pain, but in the right hands, and with supportive encouragement we can reach that place of healing.
Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!
13 But his servants came near and said to him, “My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; will you not do it? Has he actually said to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” 14 So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
